The loony Churchies are about to screw Texas’ school curriculum into the ground by promoting God and rah-rah patriotism over actual facts. Their goal, of course, is to turn all these kids into gun-waving, Bible-quoting Republicans. Like Texas doesn’t have enough of those already.
The board is to vote on a sweeping purge of alleged liberal bias in Texas school textbooks in favour of what Dunbar says really matters: a belief in America as a nation chosen by God as a beacon to the world, and free enterprise as the cornerstone of liberty and democracy.
Those are opinions, not fact! You have no right to replace historical fact with flight-of-fancy opinions, lady.
“We are fighting for our children’s education and our nation’s future,” Dunbar said. “In Texas we have certain statutory obligations to promote patriotism and to promote the free enterprise system. There seems to have been a move away from a patriotic ideology. There seems to be a denial that this was a nation founded under God. We had to go back and make some corrections.”
Cynthia, you ignorant slag. Patriotism is something kids should learn through experience, not as mandated by a fucking textbook. Your “nation founded under God” crap also needs to go, that has no place in a public school system, even if it is in the Pledge of Allegiance (it doesn’t belong in there, either). Your thinly-disguised attempts at programming religion into kids is getting tiresome.
Those corrections have prompted a blizzard of accusations of rewriting history and indoctrinating children by promoting rightwing views on religion, economics and guns while diminishing the science of evolution, the civil rights movement and the horrors of slavery.
Yeah, why write about unpleasant things like slavery when you can have fuzzy-wuzzy discussions about how great America is and why God has blessed us with being the awesome center of the universe? I suppose they’ll be cutting out all that Holocaust stuff as well. That stuff is far too depressing.
Hmmm, this all reminds me of something I read in a book once: “We, the Party, control all records, and we control all memories. Then we control the past, do we not?” Gee, what book was that from? Ah, yes…now I remember. I also remember that we have always been at war with Eastasia.
