I’ve been super lazy with the blog the past few months. OK, the last couple of years! As mentioned earlier, I’m having a sort of limbo moment (not the dance, though that would be awesome) and trying to figure out what direction to take the blog. I still have this almost biological compulsion to spout opinions so obviously I’m not going to quit altogether, but I’m trying to figure out a middle ground between the old days of long, anger-fueled rants and today’s shorter “Hey, look at this shit!” trend. And really, that’s all I have the energy for most days. 🙂
I’ve tried rolling in posts from social media because that’s where I’ve spending most of my time lately, but I’m finding that the limitations of those networks are too limiting for people like me who like to have control/ownership over everything and also have everything in one place. I’m currently using Facebook and G+ (and Twitter on occasion), but I’m at the point where I’m saying “Screw it…ain’t nobody got time for that!” G+/Facebook are too crowded, and while Twitter is super handy and easy to use, it feels too ephemeral.
So I want to keep posting quick little thoughts and links while also having a space to write longer, more thoughtful posts when the mood strikes, and I’ve come up with the beginnings of a plan to simplify and streamline things here. Only time will tell if I actually stick to it…
- Get rid of the Tags/Keywords! I don’t need to give every post a bunch of Keywords, yet I’ve done it for years even though I also have them lumped into broader Categories (“General Blatherings”, “Geek Streak”, etc.). Probably because it feeds my OCD-ish need to categorize and organize things into neat little compartments. Instead, I’m going to go through my most-used Tags, make sure they’re correctly put into the dozen-or-so Categories they should be, and stop using tags altogether. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is going to go through my site and look for any and all posts tagged with the keyword “asshat”. You can use the Search box for that, if you really needed to.
- Continue using ifttt.com to trigger posts here from G+ and Facebook when there’s no need to make a custom post. Right now these are delayed because they save as Drafts and I then post the ones which matter, so I’ll have to be better at getting them posted within a few days (as opposed to every couple of months like I do now).
- Link to my longer blog posts on Facebook/G+ to attract friends and family from there. I have never done this — I’ve kept my blog more or less anonymous for several reasons, but these days I’m giving less of a shit about that!
- Tweak the design a bit, or just make a radical change for the hell of it.
- More to come, hopefully…
