One of my friends on Facebook posted this yesterday and I just had to share because it’s the kind of thing that always throws me for a loop. This is someone who’s been looking for work for nearly a year with no luck, and he finally passed an insurance exam which will lead to a full-time job. This is apparently a tough exam which 75% of the trainees flunk, but he studied hard and he passed. Very exciting! But to whom does he give credit for this achievement?
So the Supreme Being took time out of its busy schedule of running the infinite universe and all its infinite dimensions just to help you answer a few questions on a test? This simply doesn’t compute for me. Who did the studying, read all those books, and sweated over each test answer? Only him. It astounds me that people are willing to diminish their own intellect by believing that some mystical being is pulling all the strings of life’s minutiae. God shouldn’t need to help you retain facts and figures–he allegedly gave you a brain for that purpose. Must be a crappy brain he gave us if it needs special help remembering stuff.
But you can’t make these points to the devoutly religious, because to them everything happens according to god’s will. If he had failed the test, it would have been “just part of god’s plan” rather than his own failure. Yeah, whatever helps you sleep at night. With religion, you can rationalize literally anything.
However, I wasn’t going to shit all over his parade with these kinds of thoughts because I’m not a complete bastard, but I did say say “Congrats, that’s awesome! Give yourself some credit while you’re at it, you did all the grunt work after all.” It’s the least I could do. 🙂
