Well, now! Looks like the Pope was only scheduled to visit an old friend of his, but somehow ended up meeting with Kim “Perpetual Po-Face” Davis as well. Sounds like her lawyers somehow weaseled their way into it, though they’re denying trying to stage some sort of political ambush on the Pope by sticking her in his face.
Grassi said he believes the Pope was “misled” into meeting with Davis, who served six days in a Kentucky jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
But wait, there’s more! According to Snopes, which has a nice long article on this whole thing, the Vatican is saying loud and clear that he was not endorsing her position on gay marriage:
A few days after news of the meeting broke, Vatican officials downplayed it, saying that Davis was only one of a group of several dozen people whom the Pope greeted briefly and non-privately, and that their meeting (which was not an “audience”) “should not be considered a form of support of her position”:
Now that we know the full story, I take back that stuff I wrote about him earlier. For now. 🙂
